5/31/12  Money saving ideas
Install awnings on the sunny side of your house. Seal up air leaks to save $ on air conditioning costs. Caulk around where utilities (plumbing, electricity, dryer vents, ect.) enter your home. The darker your house/roof color the more heat it will absorb, so if you're building, buying or going to repaint/replace consider lighter coolers for the exterior. Close drapes on the sunny side of your house. Plant shade trees and shrubs around your house to help reduce the sun's heat. Make sure your attic is properly ventilated.

5/24/12 Energy savings
Keeping a home cooler than necessary can cost big bucks. For most people 78*F is perfectly comfortable yet many people have a tendency to crank the thermostat down around 65*. Setting the thermostat even one degree warmer can reduce your air conditioning bill by 3-5%. If you are not going to be home raise the temp. to 80* or a little above, and use a timer to automatically bring the temp. back down to 78* before you return.

5/19/12 Air Conditioning tip
Keep your a/c filter clean. During summer when your unit is fighting this Texas heat, this means checking filters monthly. Clean all registers and air inlets to improve efficiency and reduce dust and mold buildup for cleaner air to breathe. Every year, or at least every three,  have a technician add a tune-up to your cleaning. Among other tasks, he will check your refrigerant level. If it's low you can lose as much as 20% of your air conditioning efficiency and add unneeded wear and tear to your unit.
